ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) shuts down communication between the brain and the body’s muscles, gradually paralyzing sufferers and causing them to lose the ability to talk, eat, swallow and even breathe.

According to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society of Canada, there is no effective treatment or cure for the disease and most sufferers die within 2-5 years of receiving a diagnosis.
